Canes Win Two Of Last Three

The Jasper County-Monticello High School varsity boys basketball team were dealt a tough road loss last Friday to Washington County but the Canes rebounded the following day to defeat Southeast-Macon on the road.

Landon Bonner led the Canes with 20 points in the 77-36 loss to Washington County in region action. Geralynn Benton added five points.

“They hurt us in the second half,” coach Chris Pennamon said. “We were outscored 25-9 in the third and 22-6 in the fourth. We played a good first half but after that the flood gates opened. We just fell apart in the second half.”

The coach said he was pleased with how his team bounced back on Saturday with a 43-24 win against Southwest-Macon.

“They were depleted some,” Pennamon said. “They had just come off quarantine. Still, it was a game we needed to stay in the region race. We are actually playing better on the road right now. We have won some games at home but we seem to focus better on the road.”

Bonner led the team Saturday with 24 points.

“We had a great defensive effort,” Pennamon said. “We especially played well in the first half. Everyone who stepped on the floor contributed. We held them to two points in the first quarter and 10 points total in the first half.”

Southwest did not score double figures in any quarter. Benton added five points for the Canes while Kemarion Thomas scored five and Keon Maddox added four.

Cedrion Stone and Austin Cumbess both scored two points.

In a home rematch with Southwest on Tuesday, the Canes took a 49-37 victory as Bonner scored 32 points. Jacarian Grier added six points and Maddox scored five. Grier also had 12 rebounds.

Geralynn Benton had six assists in Tuesday’s win while Kamarion Thomas had four.

Jasper County-Monticello (6-10 overall, 6-4 in Region 3-AA) will host Dodge County on Tuesday in region action.

“This game can decide this team’s future,” Pennamon said. “We still have some games we have to win to make it to state. Dodge County will be a big game. We need more wins to stay afloat.”
