Lady Cougars To Host Region Meet

Piedmont Academy’s varsity girls basketball team capped a perfect regular season mark in region play and will now look to emerge from the 1-AA tournament as a number one seed for state.

The Lady Cougars wrapped up the regular season Friday with a 59-25 road win against region foe Windsor Academy in Macon. Piedmont improved to 18-3 overall and 6-0 in region play.

In Friday’s win, coach Michael Wilson said the team accomplished what it set out to do. It was also an opportunity for the team’s younger players and backups to gain more valuable court time.

“I was happy to see some of the younger girls come in and fill some roles,” Wilson said. “Abby Arnold played really good basketball on defense and battled for rebounds. Haiden Crews, Mallory Kelly and Bailey Mobley also battled under the basket and those are what we will need from those players in the upcoming few weeks.”

The coach said the team knows once it completes play in the region tournament and gets in the state competition that the opponents will continue to get tougher.

“We will see a game when someone who is a little deeper in our rotation will need to step up and I believe they are ready when we call on them,” Wilson said. “Our top eight played well. We moved the basketball well on offense and for the most part played good defense. We still need to completely do away with some fouls due to being over aggressive. Against the better teams everything will be magnified.”

The Piedmont girls will play Thursday at home against the winner of Windsor-Oak Mountain at 6:30 p.m. All region tournament games will be at Piedmont Academy.

The Lady Cougars are currently ranked second in GISA Class AA.
