Middle School Cougars Earn Tie, Win

The Piedmont Academy Middle School baseball opened its new season last week with a 5-5 tie against Creekside Middle School in McDonough.

The Cougars jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Creekside scored all five of its runs in the bottom of the second. Piedmont tied the score with two runs in the top of the fifth.

Overall, the Cougars had eight hits in the contest compared to just two for Creekside. Piedmont committed three errors in the contest.

Jamus Wingate led the team with three hits while Gavin McCart and Evan Jefferies both had two. Sawyer Freeman drove in two runs and Avery Lazenby had one RBI.

Freeman, Jefferies and McCart split the pitching duties. Freeman recorded three strikeouts while Jefferies and McCart both had two.

Piedmont traveled to Gatewood in Eatonton on Tuesday and returned home with a 13-4 victory. McCart had two hits and drove in five runs while Tyler Griswell had two hits and two RBI. Wingate also drove in two runs.

Justin Crowder, Hunter Clay and Alex Statham each drew two walks. The Cougars took control of the game early with five runs in the top of the first followed by two runs in both the second and third innings. Piedmont scored four additional runs in the top of the fifth inning.

Statham worked 3.2 innings on the pitcher’s mound Tuesday with three strikeouts. Avery Lazenby also had two strikeouts.

The Middle School Cougars were also scheduled to host Putnam County on Wednesday of this week.
