Lonnie Wood “Bubba” Pope, Jr.

Lonnie Wood “Bubba” Pope, Jr., age 57, passed away Sunday, March 14, 2021, at his residence after an extended illness surrounded by his family and friends.

Bubba Pope was born in Eatonton on January 23, 1964 to Lonnie Wood Pope, Sr. and the late Barbara Jean Franklin Pope. He was a lifelong resident of Jasper County. Bubba worked for Pope Brothers Logging, True North Transportation and Pope Lumber.

Bubba enjoyed hunting, fishing, cooking and motocross racing. He was instrumental in the development and organization of Monticello Kart Racing along with Cory and Terry McMichael. He enjoyed working alongside his friend Dan Cathers setting up sound equipment for various functions for their business, DB Sound. Bubba was passionate about music, playing bass guitar with the band Backwoodz Branded for the past several years.

He is survived by his wife, Jamie Lyn Pope of Monticello; children, Loni Jordana Pope of Monticello, Ellen Jenkins of Monticello, Skylar McKnight of Eatonton, Tristen Wood Pope of Monticello and Colton Beal Pope of Monticello; grandchildren, Bella Grace Wilson and Keoni Wilson; father, Lonnie Wood Pope, Sr. of Monticello; brothers and sisters, Mike (Tammy) Welch of Monticello, Margaret Pope (Frank) Morris of Jamestown, N.C., Bobbi Jean Pope (Lance) Collins of Monticello, and Mike Meadows of Eatonton; and nephew, Lucas Morris of Jamestown, N.C.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, March 18, 2021, at the Monticello Baptist Church. Interment will be held in New Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery. Cory McMichael and Donnie Pope will officiate.

Serving as pallbearers will be Dan Cathers, Jacob Pope, Lucas Morris, Jordan Roberts, Maylon Wages, Jonathan Wilson, Tracey Rogers and Jim Tyler.

Serving as honorary pallbearers are David Pope, Andy Martin, Scotty Moore, Lance Collins, Spence Newman, Jacob Jones, Gabe Stone and Banks Behling.

The family suggests in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Pope Fund Raiser account set up at the Bank of Monticello.
