Diamond Cougars Win Region Opener
The Piedmont Academy baseball team ushered in the region schedule with a convincing 15-0 road win against Windsor Academy on Tuesday afternoon.
Senior Cameron Mobley earned the win going all three innings and striking out eight. Mobley also contributed at the plate with a triple and another single.
“It is nice to get a win as we start the region schedule,” coach Matt Britt said.
Mobley did not allow a hit and the only Knight runner to reach base occured a dropped third strike.
“Offensively, we took advantage of some walks,” Britt said.
Hudson Reed had a double and drove in two runs in the victory.
Last Friday the Cougars fell to Class AAA Westfield 5-1 on the road.
Piedmont will return to action today, March 25 when it travels to Eatonton to face long-time rival Gatewood. The game will have an interesting coaching matchup. Britt, along with Gatewood coach Brandon Moss, both attended high school in Walton County in the early 2000s where they were standout players for their respective schools.
Britt was a key player for George Walton Academy in Monroe helping lead the Bulldogs to a state title. Moss was a standout at Loganville High School who later had a lengthy pro baseball career. Moss helped start the LHS dynasty which continues two decades later.
Thursday’s game is set for 4:30 p.m. The Cougars are currently 2–3 while the Gators are off to a 5-1 start.
