Diamond Canes Defeat JHS Red Devils

The Jasper County-Monticello High School varsity baseball team returned to action Monday earning a home 14-4 win against Jackson High School.

The Diamond Canes (12-5 overall) rebounded from an early one-run deficit to take the lead in the bottom of the first inning. Jasper County-Monticello added six runs in the fourth inning to take control of the contest and then pushed six more runs across in the fifth inning to cap off the victory.

Baylor Edge, Cole Hays and Justyn Fields each had two hits. Edge drove in three runs while Hays and Fields both had two RBI. Graeme Williams and Mac Barton both drew two walks.

Hays had another strong effort on the pitcher’s mound with five strikeouts.

“We were able to get back in the win column on Monday,” coach Brady McMichael said. “It is always good to win especially against a team that is only 15 minutes away. I was proud of the way we played throughout the entire game. That was the first time that our seniors have beaten Jackson.”

The coach said his team did well in several areas.

“I thought we did a lot better job at the plate by going with the pitch and grinding out tough at-bats,” McMichael said. “We were able to play small ball in order to get us going and that is something we are going to have to do moving forward especially being in the middle of the region schedule. Cole didn’t have his best stuff but kept us in the game and then once we got the momentum, we did not give it back.”

McMichael’s team will travel to Jackson on Thursday for a rematch at 5:55 p.m. The Canes return to region action on Monday against Dodge County for a 5:30 p.m. home contest.

“It was exciting to see all of the fans that were able to come to the game on Monday and with the weather warming up, we are hoping that we can continue to get the great support,” the coach said.
