Diamond Cougars Lose Close One on the Road

The Piedmont Academy varsity baseball team saw a game slip away last week and is looking to shore up a few aspects of its play once spring break is complete.

The Cougars dropped a 2-1 game at Brentwood on April 1 as a lack of offense and some defensive miscues hurt the team.

Piedmont managed just one hit in the contest (David Bishop) and committed three errors. Brody Anderson did draw two walks and Camern Mobley and Ryan Holder both had one. Mobley had the team’s lone RBI.

“I thought we had been turning the page a little on offense and then we went out and got one hit the whole game,” coach Matt Britt said. “That was a head scratcher to me. It’s not that they were that great on the mound that day. The umpire was questionable on some calls. To be a good offense though you have to be able to adjust to that type of thing and we looked like we didn’t have a clue.”

Brentwood scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Eagles had trailed 1-0 until the bottom of the fifth when they evened the score.

Gavin Mask worked four innings on the pitcher’s mound and recorded three strikeouts. Bishop had two strikeouts working in relief.

“We pitched well again,” Britt said. “The game was called after six innings for darkness which was frustrating. It goes on our record as a loss in the power rankings.”

Piedmont held a 1-0 lead when a downpour caused a delay. The game was continued under less-than-desirable playing conditions and Brentwood was then able to rally for the victory.

“It was tough really to make a good pitch at that point or do anything at the plate,” Britt said.

The Cougars are now off for spring break and will return to action April 13 with a home game against Westfield.
