Lady Canes Look to Softball Season
The 2021 season is just around the corner for the Jasper County-Monticello High School fast-pitch softball team.
Coach Justin Hamby’s team will open the new campaign on Monday, Aug. 9 at 5:30 p.m. at Putnam County High School in Eatonton. The Lady Canes will then face Eastside High School of Covington on August 10 at 5:30 p.m.
Hamby is entering his first season as the program’s head coach. While he is in his first season as the varsity softball coach, Hamby previously coached in the system at Jasper County Middle School working with several sports teams from softball to baseball, wrestling and track.
The team has been preparing for the new season with an emphasis on fundamentals, something Hamby said he stresses. With a recent history of advancing to the state tournament, the program is on solid football, Hamby said.
The new varsity coach worked with some of the current team members when they were in middle school.
Summer workouts and practices are progressing well for the team, their coach said.
“The players are showing a lot of promise,” Hamby said.
Other early season games include at First Presbyterian (Aug. 12) and home against Bleckley County (Aug. 17) and Alcovy High School (Aug. 18). A road game against Northeast-Macon is set for Aug. 19.
The JV team will begin the 2021 season on August 9 against Ola High School at home. The JV Lady Canes will then host Putnam County on August 12.
