Lady Cougars Varsity Softball Earn Three Wins

It has been a busy stretch of games for the Piedmont Academy varsity fast-pitch softball team.

The Lady Cougars (6-3 overall) defeated Brentwood 3-1 in extra innings last Wednesday in Sandersville. Piedmont tied the game in the top of the seventh and then scored two runs in the top of the eighth to secure the victory.

A downpour of rain 15 minutes before the scheduled start time caused a 90-minute delay.

“We were a little slow to start and just couldn’t get anyone across the plate,” coach Joe Johnson said. “We finally scored one in the seventh to tie the game and forced extra innings. We were able to execute in the eighth and score two runs to get the win.”

Fleming Sealy led the team with three hits while Emily McEwen connected for two and Teagan Satterfield had one. McEwen, Satterfield and Teagan Hinson each drove in runs.

McEwen and Hinson both worked four effective innings in the pitcher’s circle recorded two strikeouts each and combining to limit the Lady Eagles to just three hits.

Piedmont then played two games on Saturday in Perry. The Lady Cougars fell to Westfield 5-1 in their first contest of the day before defeating Southwest Georgia 6-3.

In the matchup with Westfield, Marissa Holder, Kylee Keck and McEwen each had hits. Maddie Waddleton drew a walk.

The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth when Piedmont scored its lone run. The Lady Hornets answered with two in the bottom half of the inning and three more in the sixth.

Averi Camp worked 5.2 innings and recorded seven strikeouts.

In their second game on Saturday, the Lady Cougars benefited from two-RBI efforts from Waddleton and McEwen to earn the win. Piedmont scored two runs in the first, fifth and sixth innings.

Hinson went the distance in the pitcher’s circle and recorded a strikeout.

“It was a back-and-forth game until we put a little distance between us,” Johnson said of the Southwest Georgia game. “Our pitching and defense did the job and we were able to pick up the win.”

It was the first loss for Southwest Georgia who entered the game 7-0.

The Lady Cougars were able to play Tuesday at Briarwood in Warrenton and earned a 4-2 victory. The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth when Piedmont scored two runs.

The lead increased to 4-0 in the top of the sixth before the Lady Buccaneers scored two in the bottom half. Briarwood would not get any closer.

McEwen had three hits for the Lady Cougars and Sealy had an RBI. Keck and Hinson both drew walks.

McEwen wen the distance in the pitcher’s circle recording four strikeouts.

The Lady Cougars are scheduled to host Fullington Academy today, Sept. 2, at 5:30 p.m.

Piedmont’s Middle School softball team had two games scheduled earlier this week but both were cancelled. The Middle School Lady Cougars will look to host Fullington on Thursday at 4 p.m.
