Cougars Rebound with Road Win

After a disappointing setback the previous week, the Piedmont Academy varsity football team rebounded with a 24-21 road victory last Friday against a strong Augusta Prep team.

“I feel like we beat a really good team,” coach Clint Satterfield said. “Augusta Prep had really been playing good. We played strong defensively in the first half and then held on for the win.”

The Cougars led 10-0 at halftime but Augusta Prep got rolling offensively in the second half. The Piedmont defense was able to stop the Cavaliers at the Cougar 15-yard line for the victory.

Quarterback Justin Reynolds was 22-of-37 for 210 yards and three touchdowns. Landon Connor caught a team-high eight passes for 65 yards while Ryan Holder make six receptions for 78 yards with a pair of touchdowns.

Reynolds was able to spread the wealth to several of his teammates as Brody Anderson (three receptions for 19 yards), Luke Welch (two receptions for 20 yards), Michael Joseph (two catches for 10 yards and a touchdown) and Gavin Mask (one catch for 18 yards) also played key offensive roles.

Joseph rushed for 24 yards on 16 carries. As a team, the Cougars had much more success last Friday than their previous outing.

Defensively, Connor made eight tackles with two fumble recoveries. Dalton Wallace and Mason Tanner both had seven defensive stops.

Welch and Mask recorded five tackles and Cole Wade contributed four tackles and a fumble recovery. Anderson finished with three tackles and an interception while Mark Hicks made three tackles.

Spencer Carter (two tackles), Holder (two tackles), Joseph (two tackles, forced fumble), Ridge Stroud (one tackle) and Mason Owens (one tackle) also helped secure the win.

Piedmont (6-2 overall) will play one of its toughest regular season opponents this Friday when the Cougars host region foe Brentwood (6-1) at Cougar Field.

The lone loss for the War Eagles came against Class AAA powerhouse John Milledge Academy 38-12 in their 2021 opener. Brentwood has not lost since winning each game by wide margins.

“By far this will be the best team we have played,” Satterfield said. “It will take a lot of good things to happen for us to have a chance. We are going to have to find a way to keep up with them scoring-wise. We hope a big home crowd for Senior Night will help us.”

Kickoff Friday is set for 7:30 p.m. in Monticello.

The Middle School Cougars also earned a 48-6 road win at Trinity last week.
