Cougars Fall To Strong Brentwood
The Piedmont Academy football team continued to battle last Friday night even after falling behind early to a powerful Brentwood team.
In the end, the Cougars (6-3, 0-1) fell 55-29 despite some impressive offensive numbers by several players. Trailing 35-22 at halftime, Piedmont took the second half kickoff and marched into scoring territory before turning the football over on downs.
“If we could have scored then, I think it would have been a different game,” coach Clint Satterfield said.
The Cougars then got a defensive stop but could not close the deficit.
“We had our chances to make it a game,” Satterfield said. “Offensively, we put up big numbers and moved the football all night. Defensively, we just couldn’t stop them.”
Brentwood’s Wing-T offense moved the football effectively throughout the contest.
The War Eagles (7-1, 1-0) jumped out to a 21-0 first quarter lead but Piedmont had rallied to with 13 by halftime. Brentwood added 13 more points in the third quarter and seven four in the game’s final 12 minutes to secure the victory.
The Cougars had what is believed to be a record-setting performance by quarterback Justin Reynolds who passed for 346 yards and three touchdowns. Reynolds was 26-42 through the air in the home contest.
Landon Connor made eight catches for 116 yards and Ryan Kennemore had five receptions for 77 yards and a touchdown.
Luke Welch had another big performance with six catches for 66 yards and a touchdown. Ryan Holder made three catches for 42 yards and a touchdown.
Michael Joseph (two catches for 25 yards) and Brody Anderson (two catches for 20) yards also contributed to the passing attack.
Joseph also rushed for 81 yards and a score on 15 attempts.
Piedmont did its damage offensively through the air while Brentwood had a massive performance on the ground.
Gavin Mask paced the Cougars on defense with 10 tackles while Connor had seven tackles and an interception. Welch had seven tackles with a forced fumble. Cole Wade added five tackles and a forced fumble while Dalton Wallace made five defensive stops.
Anderson (four tackles), Mason Owens (three tackles) and Joseph (three tackles) also contributed defensively.
While disappointed in the final outcome, the Cougar players and coaches went back to work this week to prepare for one of the program’s oldest rivals.
Piedmont will host Gatewood this Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Gators enter the contest 4-4 overall.
“It’s a big rival game so you can throw everyone out the window,” Satterfield said. “There will be lots of emotions. We will go out and do what we can do to get a victory.”
