Several Elections To Be Held This Year
Voters in Jasper County, like those across the state, will have plenty of opportunity to express their opinions this year.
First chance will be the city of Monticello special election for Mayor Pro-tem scheduled for March 15. Mrs. Gail Harrell vacated the Mayor Pro-tem seat to run for Mayor. She was elected, without opposition. So now a special election is being held Those candidates are Doug Currie and Randy Strozier. It is a non-partisan election.
After that, election season heats up for everyone, with the General Primary Election, Nonpartisan General Election and any special election will be held on May 24, with a voter registration deadline of April 25. Runoffs, if needed, from those elections will be held June 21.
After the primaries are held in May, the next time voters will go to the polls is for the General Election on November 8. The deadline to register to vote in that is October 10.
Georgians will choose most statewide office holders as well as a U.S. Senator and Representatives.
Locally, three school board posts and two county commission posts are up for election.
School board districts 1, 3, and 5 are up for election this year. Those seats are currently held by Towonder Dennis, Dr. Shannon Barton and Lewis Rice, respectively.
District 2 Commissioner is Commission Chairman Bruce Henry, and District 4 Commissioner is Vice-Chairman Gerald Stunkel. No one has yet announced for any local position.
