Lady Hurricanes Soccer Team Wins Again
The successful start to the new season continued for the Jasper County-Monticello High School girls soccer team last week.
The Lady Canes defeated Putnam County 3-1 and the victory was a milestone for the program, coach Angela Savage said.
“It has been four years since we have played Putnam County and they have always been a strong team,” Savage said.
Becky Leigh Wilson scored two goals and freshman Hailey Roper added another. Jasper County-Monticello scored two goals in the first half and the third in the second half.
“Grace DeGarmo, a freshman, is performing great in the goalie position,” her coach said. “Our varsity keeper, Kate Robinson, is still playing basketball and Grace has stepped into that position well. She had eight saves during Friday night’s game.”
The Lady Canes are benefiting from strong offensive play early in the 2022 season.
“Our offense is really putting in the work as they take as many attempts on goal as possible,” Savage said. “We were able to make a total of 19 attempts against Putnam. Our defense is solid and is also a key to winning. Good defense makes it difficult for our opponents to have looks at goal.”
The Lady Canes (3-1) even impressed the opposing coach.
“After the game was over the Putnam coach asked me where did I get our girls,” Savage said. “I told him they have always been here. As we continue to practice and play in this early part of the season, I continue to see the growth of these student athletes as individual players and as a team. To say that I am proud of this team is an understatement. I have big expectations for them this year.”
The boys (0-4) team fell 11-0 to Putnam County last week.
The varsity teams will travel to Dodge County today, Feb. 17 for region matches beginning at 5:30 p.m.
