Hurricane Cross Country Teams Make Strides
The Hurricane Cross Country team had two meets this past week. The teams traveled to Social Circle on September 21 where three athletes medaled.
Top runners in the boy’s race were JaMarkus Thomas (right), who landed in the top 10 with a fifth place finish and medaled at a time of 19:01.55, followed closely by Kemarion Thomas (left) who came in with a sixth place finish at a time of 19:02.67. Powell Goolsby finished strong in fifteenth at 20:00.07.
In the girl’s race, Brianna Dalton (center) completed the race in fifth place at 23:35.34, followed by Elizabeth Roberts at 27:44.42.
Last Saturday, the Canes traveled to Jones County for the Greyhound Invitational. Coach Dotty Dalton said, “words cannot express how proud I am of these athletes. They ran with heart! It still brings tears to my eyes. Out of 18 runners, 16 set a personal record, one athlete set a season best, and one finished the race while injured. This week we will be setting new goals, individual and team.”
The top runners for the boy’s event were JaMarkus Thomas running the 3.2 mile course in 18:50.59, and Goolsby finishing at 18:51.26, Dalton received a medal for her twelfth place finish in the girl’s race at 21:46.85 followed by Roberts placing 48th and coming in with a time of 24:45.71.
A meet is planned for Saturday, Oct. 1 but may be postponed due to weather.
