Students, Others Register To Vote
Isabella Waddell, a senior at Jasper County High School, completed the paperwork to register to vote last week in a “Voter Registration Event” sponsored by the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) organization and the Civic Engagement Group.
The event was held at the school during lunch to register students who are at least within six months of their 18th birthday. More than 10 students registered to vote for the first time with the assistance of Jasper County Chief Registrar Mrs. Carole Norris. FBLA sponsors this event each year as a community service project to help students take advantage of the easy voter registration process, and this year members of the newly formed Civic Engagement Group also helped sponsor.
Those hosting the event were FBLA officers J.D. Williams and Hannah Tinney. FBLA advisers are Mrs. Johnnie Sue Moore and Mrs. Amy Scroggs, and Civic Engagement sponsor is Mrs. Bonnie Garvin.
These dates coincide with the voter registration deadlines for all voters. Anyone wanting to vote in the November 8 General Election must be registered to vote no later than Tuesday, Oct. 11. Those who voted in the last election are still registered, but those who have not voted in years, or who are young and just reaching voting age must register.
Early voting begins on Monday, Oct. 17 in the basement of the Courthouse, and Saturday voting will take place on October 22 and 29.
