Scott Ozburn Riner
Gwinnett County Senior Corrections Officer Scott Ozburn Riner, age 59, of Winder, tragically passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2022.
Funeral services for Officer Riner were held on Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2022, at North Metro Baptist Church in Lawrenceville with Dr. Frank Cox officiating. Burial followed at West View Cemetery in Monticello.
Scott was born June 4, 1963, in Atlanta, to the late DuPree Riner and the late Eloise Riner. He spent his early years growing up in the Embry Hills area of DeKalb County, attending Warren Elementary and Henderson High School.
He had many childhood friends from the neighborhood who he has kept in contact with over the years. The most common memory of Scott from those years was him cruising the area in his red pick-up truck.
God, country and family were very important to Scott. He later moved to Gwinnett County and was a devoted husband to his wife of 22 years, Elana Chessor Riner and as a dad to his son Taylor Sparacino (Mallory) and daughter Madison Parker (Joshua). Being called “Grand Daddy” by his grandson Easton Parker was his greatest joy as he loved to watch YouTube videos with him and taking him fishing in his pond.
For the past 12 years, Scott worked as a Corrections Officer for the Gwinnett County Department of Corrections, obtaining the rank of Senior Corrections Officer. He took pride in his duty to the community, and he considered it an honor to wear that badge.
As an avid outdoorsman, Scott would retreat on the weekends to his farm where he immersed himself in hunting, fishing or just “pid’dlin” on the tractor. Best described in his later years as an “old soul”, Scott enjoyed the simpler things and would love to reminisce of times spent with his sister, brother, aunts, uncles and cousins who were all very important to him.
Scott is also survived by his sister Cindy Riner McKnight (Jeff), brother, Eric Riner (Kathryn), father-in-law and mother-in-law, James and Katie Chessor. Also his niece, Natalie Riner; nephews, Brad McKnight, Todd McKnight and Andrew Riner, as well as a host of cousins, extended family, and close friends.
So that others can continue to enjoy the outdoors he cherished, the family is asking in lieu of sending flowers to instead to make a donation in memory of Scott Riner to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Foundation by accessing this web page: https://gnrf.gadnr.org/donate
