Middle School Hurricanes Play in PAC Tournament

The Jasper County Middle School (JCMS) basketball teams were both headed into the Piedmont Athletic Conference (PAC) semifinal playoffs this week and possibly the championships on Saturday, Feb. 4.

The Lady Canes, coached by Tracie Glawson, earned a 31-27 home win against Morgan County last week to end their regular season schedule on Eighth Grade Night.

Toni Gantt had 10 points for the Lady Canes; Kamryn Davis scored 8; Jazmin Maddox, 7; Layla Dumas, 4; and Malayha Thurman, 2.

On Super Saturday, Jan. 28 the ladies took on Social Circle at the tournament hosted at Youth Middle School. The Lady Canes defeated the Lady Redskins 41-24. Jazmin Maddox scored 19 points; Jamryn Davis, 9; Toni Gantt, 5; Jordyn Asbell, 5; and Malayha Thurman, 3.

The ladies then took on Putnam County in a semifinal game Tuesday but came up just short to fall in the second round. Putnam will now face the winner of Loganville vs. Youth in the championship game on Saturday.

The Canes also earned a 46-34 win over Morgan County on Eighth Grade Night to end the regular season. Dereon Pennamon led the scoring with 16 points; Chance Ross, 11 points; Arrington Bostic, 8; M.J. Maddox, 5; Jayce Stewart, Brelynd Beasley, and Tyrin Epps, 2 points each.

Like the Lady Canes, the boys squad handily beat their Super Saturday opponent Social Circle by a score of 46-21. Dereon Pennamon again led the scoring with 17 points; Chance Ross had 12; Tyrin Epps, 10; Wailer Sands, 3; M.J. Maddox and Jayce Stewart 2 points each.

The boys were scheduled to play Carver Middle School Wednesday in their semifinal game. The Canes recorded a one point loss to Carver in December 2022 and the squad will be looking to avenge that loss and head into the title game.

A win against Carver would have the squad facing the winner of the Morgan vs. Putnam matchup at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday at Youth Middle School, 1804 Hwy. 11 South in Loganville.
