Two Qualify for Mayor; Election Set March 21
David Thompson, the current chairman of the Monticello Historic Preservation Commission, has qualified for mayor of Monticello in the special election to be held .
Mr. Thompson expressed interest previously in the position, and now that Mayor Gail Harrell has stepped down, he qualified Monday for the position.
Also qualifying to run for mayor in the special election to be held March 21 was DeAshley Crutchfield Thurman, who qualified Wednesday.
The city election will be held in conjunction with the county-wide Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) election scheduled to renew the current one cent SPLOST, which doesn’t run out until 2024, but county officials determined this is the best time to have the election.
So all city voters can vote for a mayoral candidate and the SPLOST. County residents, who do not live in the city, will only vote for SPLOST. The deadline to register to vote is February 21.
