New Mayor Elected; SPLOST Passes

DeAshley R. Thurman was elected Mayor of Monticello in a election that culminated Tuesday.

Only 16.59 percent of the city voters turned out for the special election for Monticello Mayor. The election was required after Gail Harrell resigned in January.

David Thompson, head of the Monticello Historic Preservation Commission, and Ms. Thurman were seeking the post of Mayor.

Ms. Thurman received 255 votes to Mr. Thompson’s 217. Some 475 city voters cast ballots out of an eligible 2,863.

For the countywide SPLOST vote, the turnout was even worse. Only 8.19 percent of registered voters in the county. But they did approve a renewal of the current Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax.

In the county, 661 voters said yes to the SPLOST, while 234 voted against it, making the voter turnout 913 voters out of a registered 11,141.
