Piedmont Cougar Soccer Has Learning Season

Piedmont Academy’s varsity soccer teams have been learning as they go this spring.

“Soccer is going well,” said Michael Wilson, who is helping coach the program. “I think the kids are improving. Between the two teams we have two seniors and two juniors so this is a year to learn how to play the game. The boys have a pretty good group and they play hard. Playing a junior varsity schedule this year was a really good idea. They’ve been in most games and each game there is better ball movement and organization on the field.”

The boys faced Monsignor Donovan recently and led 1-0 while having opportunities for more scoring attempts.

“We were just a little late on getting to the ball in the scoring area,” Wilson said. “The team is communicating better each game with one another and the players are getting better understanding what they need to do and how to go about it. Mark Myles and Hunter Cleveland have provided some really good scoring opportunities. Hunter capitalized in the Monsignor Donovan game with our lone goal. Owen Piedra, Corey Shaw and Hunter Thomson are doing a good job in the midfield of regaining possession or slowing the counter attack. Defensively, the team is getting better each game.”

The Lady Cougars are in the same boat. They have two really good midfielders in Allanah Levins and Callie Branan and those two do a really good job of helping the younger ones and making sure to keep folks working and on the same page, coaches said.

The Lady Cougars defeated Monsignor Donovan 11-1 which was a region win so coaches hope that momentum will carry on throughout the remainder of the regular season. Cally Branan and Allanah Levins led the offense while Taylor Jenkins, Sam Gray, Isabel White, Morgan Hayes and Mary Myles added one goal each.
