De’Ashley Thurman Is Sworn
De’Ashley Crutchfield Thurman was sworn in as Mayor of Monticello last Thursday at City Hall.
Ms. Thurman defeated David Thompson in a special election to name a mayor as the former mayor, Gail Harrell, stepped down.
After being sworn and taking the helm of the city, Ms. Thurman said
“Good afternoon, surrounded by residents, elected leaders and many from our community, I have the distinct honor of representing you and our city. Thank you, my family and loving husband, daughter, father, mother, and brother who stood beside me.
“Before we begin, I want all our young people to know that if they work hard, study hard and play by the rules; put God first…they can accomplish anything they set out to do.
“Despite what people might think; it’s clear much work remains. When I talk to residents… I hear too many stories of people who want to work closer to home. My heart breaks when I see children in need because of this economy. Hearing economists say the recession is ending but still offers families no comfort.
“I will not give up. I will continue to fight and jump hurdles as long as I’m in office,” she said.
“1. Help lay the foundation to create jobs and opportunity for our residents.
“2. To continue to keep our neighborhoods and families safe.
“3. Find ways to deliver more efficient government and the best City services around.
“4. We know that government cannot end a national recession. But it can play a role in helping residents and businesses make it through difficult times.
“In a moment, I’m going to step away from the podium and we’re going to have a conversation. I’ve asked some residents what’s most important to them. Many have submitted questions ahead of time. I’ve also talked to people in this room.
“First, I want to close my formal remarks with the answer to one of the questions I’m most often asked.
“Ashley, what’s the biggest challenge facing our city?”
“My response is always… the biggest challenge we’re facing is always changing. But the key to overcoming all these challenges is constant.
“That is partnership.
“Collaboration is the driving force behind every success!
“It sounds simple, but it doesn’t happen everywhere, it has to be teamwork. A lot of people have stood on the sidelines but now it’s time to get in the game. Please join me in making our city values and respected.
“As we searched for a way to move forward, I was reminded of three-words…… Together… We Will…
“Whatever our goal is… accomplishing that goal must begin with unity!
“Thank You!”
