City Breaks Ground for Building
City officials, workers and others gathered Monday for a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Public Works building being built by the city of Monticello to house its electric, gas, and street departments. Former Mayor Bryan Standifer spoke about the momentous first steps in making the plan come to fruition, along with former Mayor Gail Harrell and current Mayor DeAshley Thurman.
The city of Monticello takes pride in knowing the citizens will not incur any additional debt for the 9,600 square foot building. The building is scheduled for completion in late November 2023.
Those taking part in the groundbreaking included Gas Department worker Ross Cash, Gas Superintendent Robbie Colvin, City Clerk Carnethia Pennamon, Councilman Larry Thurman, Councilman David Wease, former Mayor Bryan Standifer, Mayor DeAshley Thurman, former Mayor Gail Harrell, Mayor Pro-tem Doug Currie, Councilwoman Jenny Murphy, City Manager Lathaydra Sands, and DDA Director Jackie Garland.
Electric department chair Michael Boykin was not present, as he was restoring power on the windy afternoon.
