Lady Cougars Eager for New Season

With plenty of championship hardware on its resume, the Piedmont Academy softball team is set for another run at state glory.

The Lady Cougars will open the 2023 season on Thursday, Aug. 3, against George Walton Academy on the road in Monroe at 4:30 p.m.

The game is one of several against larger and quality opponents lined up by Piedmont coach Joe Johnson.

“I’m excited to get the season started,” the coach said this week. “The girls have been working hard. I know they are ready to show what they can do against quality competition.”

The Lady Cougars have been the class of Class AA in recent seasons. The team was 23-2 in 2022 on its way to another state title.

Last season’s schedule was also tough with some GHSA opponents.

In 2023, Piedmont once again has some GHSA foes on the schedule as well as some GIAA schools who compete at the AAAA and AAA level.

Johnson said the tough regular season competition will only help the team as the postseason arrives.

“It should be a fun season,” the coach said.

The Lady Cougars return several key players from last season including Marissa Holder and Emily Whitwell.

Following the opener Piedmont will host Pinewood and Westfield on Saturday, Aug. 5.
