Lady Cougars Fall to Westfield on the Road

In a matchup between two of the top teams in their respective classifications, Piedmont Academy’s softball squad fell to Westfield on the road Tuesday 2-1.

The host Lady Hornets took a 1-0 lead into the seventh inning when the Lady Cougars (16-5 overall) evened the score. Westfield then scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh.

The loss snapped an 11-game winning streak for the Lady Cougars but coach Joe Johnson said it was good for his team to play such a strong opponent.

“I wanted to see where we are now as compared to the first week of the season when we lost 6-1 to Westfield,” coach Joe Johnson said.

In Tuesday’s rematch, Emily Whitwell had two hits while Kylee Keck, Shaniyah Lane and Kolbee Osborne each had one. Lane had three stolen bases.

Whitwell went the distance scattering seven hits allowing just one earned run and striking out three.

Westfield improved to 20-3 overall.

Prior to Tuesday’s matchup with Westfield, the Lady Cougars recorded their 11th consecutive win defeating region foe Brentwood 12-0 at home on Sept. 28.

Piedmont scored two runs in the first, second and third innings and then added six more in the fourth to close out the victory.

Lane had three hits, one run and an RBI while Breck Piedra and Marissa Holder both had two hits. Piedra scored two runs while Holder had two RBI and two runs scored.

Teagan Hinson, Kamie Gibby, Keck, Whitwell, Memphis Sweat and Osborne also helped pace the offense. Whitwell scored two runs and drove in one. Keck collected three RBI.

Whitwell, Lane and Piedra each had two stolen bases.

Whitwell worked all four innings in the pitcher’s circle recording five strikeouts.

The Lady Cougars will close out their region schedule today, Oct. 5 against Edmund Burke at 6 p.m. The final regular season game will be Tuesday, Oct. 10 against John Milledge, also at home, at 6:30 p.m.
