Deadline For Voters To Register Is Tuesday

Next Tuesday, Oct. 10, is the final day Monticelloans can register to vote and be eligible to vote in the November 7 general election to select a Mayor Pro-tem and two council members.

It’s also the last day for Shady Dale voters to register for the special election to fill the seat vacated by the resignation of council member Larissa Ruark.

Early voting begins Monday, Oct. 16.

Incumbent Monticello Mayor Pro-tem Doug Currie is being challenged by Terri Saunders. City Council District 1, Post 2 incumbent Cynthia Miller is being challenged by former mayor Gail Harrell. District 2, Post 2 incumbent Jenny Murphy is being challenged by Melissa Watson.

Qualifying for the Shady Dale post ends today, Oct. 5, at noon. At press time Wednesday only one person had qualified—Phillip Darrell Quick. If no one else qualifies there will be no need for an election.

Early voting will begin October 16, and take place Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and includes two Saturdays—October 21 and 28 in the basement of the Jasper County Courthouse on the Monticello Square.
