Voting Begins Monday for Run-off

A run-off election for Monticello City Council, District 2, Post 2, is set for Tuesday, April 9, and early voting will take place in the basement of the Courthouse daily next week, April 1-5, 9 am. to 5 p.m.

Zach Middleton and Tim Womack are facing off after Melissa Watson-Strozier was eliminated. The special election was necessary because of the death of City Councilman David Wease.

In other election news, campaigning for the May 21 primaries and non-partisan election is under way, with several contested races.

The most heated race may be the three-way race for Chief Magistrate. Incumbent Tim Lam is being challenged by John Henderson and Chrissy Pitts Mason. District 3 County Commission also is a three-way race, with incumbent Don Jernigan being challenged by Rob Alexander and Chris Blakely.

The District 1 Commission seat is also contested, as incumbent Shelia Jones is being challenged by David McGuire.

No other constitutional officers are seeing competition, and District 5 Commissioner Steven Ledford is not being challenged.

As County Commission Districts 1, 3, and 5 are up for grabs, for the Board of Education it is Districts 2 and 4.

Matt Kelly qualified for the District 2 seat and Michele Celani is seeking the District 4 seat. Erin Lynch and Bill Schilling are each stepping down at the end of their current terms—December 31, 2024.
