Jubilee Is Held Saturday
A group called Bridging Monticello brought the Jasper Jubilee—a local celebration held annually in the late 80s and early 90s—back to life Saturday when several groups set up in places around town to raise money, votes, or just educate people about their services.
Just4Fun Radio broadcast from early morning until mid afternoon, and the local band, Burning Daylight, entertained in the afternoon. Activities included a reptile show and law enforcement virtual reality in the Visitors’ Center. A cake walk was held on the Square with several delicious cakes given away. Scouts, the Health Department, numerous businesses and political candidates, artists, bakers, and more were offering their wares.
A hot dog heating contest was held, with Tyler Garvin downing 10 hot dogs in 10 minutes. The competition was tough, but the young man beat out all other competitors. They had a crowd urging them on during the competition.
Children thoroughly enjoyed water balloons at Thomas Persons Hall, and many got a sweet treat from Bakin’ Me Crazy. Linda Aldridge offered art work for sale, including note cards and post cards, and more items, and there were several vendors offering jewelry, yard sale items, children’s items, etc.
Activities also took place on the Square, at Thomas Persons and across from the Post Office. The event was co-sponsored by the city of Monticello and Jasper County Historical Foundation.
