Cane Football Does Summer Prep
The Monticello Hurricane varsity football team finished up June workouts by hosting a two-day, 8-team padded camp at Hurricane Field.
Like-size schools and some much larger came and competed with the Hurricanes. Alcovy, Heritage Conyers, Salem, West Laurens, George Walton, Haralson County, and Locust Grove participated in the camp.
“It’s good to get to compete against other schools and go best on best so you know where you stand. We were able to play a lot of kids and are in a very good place headed into July,” Coach Ashley Henderson said. “This was a big deal, we had around 400 players on campus. Thank you to all the coaches, admin, and volunteers that helped us host this event. We got some great work in.”
The Hurricanes had 15 practices in June. With a roster of 76 players, this is the largest team in Henderson’s tenure. Some 52 players had perfect attendance in June.
“We graduated some talent, there is no question about it but I really like this football team. These kids are invested, said the coach.
“Fifteen practices in June is a lot of work. Fall football begins in January and it really revs up in June. There are a million and one reasons to miss in the summer. It’s hot, video games, travel ball, our guys are finding reasons to be there. It takes what it takes, tough people win.”
July 1-5 was a mandatory Georgia High School Association dead week for all Georgia high school sports programs. The team resumed action July 8 and continue working towards the 2024 season.
The Hurricanes will compete in their second padded camp at Piedmont College at FCA football camp this week.
Crawford County will come to town on August 9 for the first scrimmage and then the season opens against Taylor County on the road the following week.
“It’ll be here before you know it. We are further along right now than we have been. Proud of the effort of all involved.” Henderson concluded.
