Varsity Cougars Earn Another Impressive 33-0 Gridiron Win

It was another strong performance for the Piedmont Academy football team last Friday as the Cougars defeated visiting Baconton Charter 33-0 at Cougar Field.

Mason Tumlin rushed for two touchdowns and Hunter Cleveland passed for one as Piedmont improved to 2-0 for the young season.

Coach Clint Sattefield was also impressed with the defensive play for his team.

“The defense kept us in the game in the first half,” the coach said.

Tumlin, who excels in all areas, had a sack which resulted in a fumble right before halftime. Hunter then connected with Owen Piedra for a quick touchdown pass and 13-0 halftime lead.

In the third quarter, Piedra went 50 yards on a fake punt for a score and one the next series Daniel Joseph had an interception returned for a score.

“It went from 13-0 to 27-0 in two plays,” Satterfield said.

On special teams, Mark Myles had two field goals including a 43-yarder.

Cleveland was 11-of-20 passing for 112 yards and a touchdown. Tumlin, Hunter Thomson and Mason Carol led the rushing attack.

Camden Moss had three receptions for 23 yards while Jack Adams had two catches for 24 yards. In total, seven Piedmont players caught passes in Friday’s win.

Thomson had two catches for 19 yards with Tumlin, Piedra, Ethan Barman and Corbett Crews each having one reception.

Defensively, Silas Cowan had five solo tackles with two stops for a loss. Piedra had three solo stops with an assist while Tumlin added three solo stops with four assists, three tackles for a loss, a forced fumble and fumble recovery.

Joseph finished with two solo tackles, two assists and an interception. Tyler McVey added a solo tackle, one assist, a tackle for loss and an interception. Moss also had an interception.

Braxton Floyd had two solo stops, one assist and two tackles for loss. Crews had a strong defensive effort with three solo tackles, two assists, a tackle for loss and quarterback sack.

Kohen Burrell, Bryson Dudley and Dylan Brimberry also contributed to the strong defensive effort for the Cougars.

Piedmont returned to work this week for another home game this Friday. The Cougars are hosting undefeated Lakeview Academy. The Lions have outscored their opponents 115-6 this season including a 42-0 win against Town County last week.

“We should be facing our toughest test of the season in the region opener,” Satterfield said.

Lions quarterback Kyari Burch has already passed for 558 yards and eight touchdowns in three games.

Kickoff at Cougar Field is set for 7:30 p.m.

NOTES: Piedmont Academy’s Middle School football team fell to Bethlehem Christian Academy on the road 40-0 last week.

“Our first-year players continue to stand out on the field,” said Coach Drew McMillan.

Mathew Carter had several tackles and Cason Phillips had an interception.

“We look forward to a good week of practice and a chance to compete against George Walton Academy Thursday (today) at home,” McMillan said.
