Ineligibility Ruling

With regard to the varsity Lady Hurricanes having to forfeit 14 of their 24-25 softball season wins due to an ineligible player competing, Hurricane Athletic Director Jeff Holloway noted that it was completely unintentional.

The athlete in question was a transfer student-athlete and the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) has clear rules about transfer eligibility. According to the GHSA bylaws, for a player to be athletically eligible immediately after a transfer, the player must make a bona fide move and prove it. There also must not be evidence of undue influence from the program to which the player is transferring.

Mr. Holloway acknowledged the student was a transfer and that there are several ways to process transfers and that every situation is different.

GHSA requires that all games won when the athlete in question competed must be forfeited, other consequences may be instituted as well.

When asked if the local program was fined, as in the recent situation with the Mary Persons football team who had to pay $1,500 for an ineligible transfer, the AD said that a nominal fine was paid.
