Deer Festival Celebrates the Deer
Jasper County is known for deer hunting, as it is the Deer Capital of Georgia, and this one was killed just a couple weeks ago here.
Bo Denney killed this 15 point buck at 40 yards with a crossbow off private property on Smithboro Road.
We will celebrate the deer as we have done for the last 50 years with the Deer Festival slated for Saturday, Nov. 2, on and off the Monticello Square.
The festivities begin at 7:30 a.m. with a one-mile fun run on Funderburg Drive. Then the 5k Deer Dash takes off at 8 a.m. on East Greene Street. By 9 a.m. when trophies are given out, all the arts and crafts vendors are set up along with the food vendors, musical entertainment, child entertainment and anything else ready for a day of festivities which will continue until 5 p.m.
Always a hit, the Venison Cook-off will take place in the parking lot across from the Bank of Monticello with cooks setting up early and food typically running out early.
After the Deer Festival, Thomas Persons Hall will host a concert featuring Noah Riley Teal at 7 p.m.
Also that night, everyone will turn their clocks back one hour to signal the end of Daylight Savings Time.
The Monticello News will publish its guide for everything you need to know about the Deer Festival on Thursday, Oct. 31, and it will be distributed with that week’s newspaper, as well as being given to all runners, vendors, and others available for pick-up by festival goers.
It will feature many deer killed right here in Jasper County, and we encourage all successful hunters to show off that buck and send a photo to us at advertising@themonticellonews.com or come by 247 West Washington Street. We love to show off successful hunters!
