Piedmont Sweeps Windsor
Piedmont Academy’s varsity basketball teams made the familiar trek to Macon Tuesday to face Windsor Academy.
The Lady Cougars improved to 5-1 overall with a 63-38 victory. The game was tied at 10 after the first quarter but Piedmont used a 24-4 run in the second quarter to take control of the contest.
The Piedmont girls have now won their past four games.
Piedmont’s boys recorded their first win Tuesday with a 66-60 victory against the Knights.
First-year coach Christian Palmer said his players have continued working each day.
Prior to Tuesday’s games, Piedmont hosted long-time rival Gatewood on Friday.
The Lady Cougars earned a 57-33 win using a 27-point second quarter to take control of the contest.
Holder turned in a massive performance with 31 points, including seven 3-pointers. The senior also had 16 rebounds, five assists and two steals.
Sarah Ellen Stroud added 13 points with four assists, three steals and three rebounds. Kylee Keck finished with six points, six rebounds and a steal.
Coach Michael Wilson said his team continues to play well during the first portion of the season.
“We are starting to see some looks offensively that benefits our scorers and we are going to keep tweaking that to get Marissa, Kylee and Sarah Ellen into positions where they can score,” the coach said. “It’s great to have three weapons but it’s up to us as coaches to get them where we can get into a rhythm and look fluid in what we do in the half court setting.”
Other Lady Cougars are contributing as well.
“Taylor Jenkins is really stepping up for us,” Wilson said. “I’ve felt all along replacing a four -ear starter at post would be hard, and it is, but she’s progressing nicely. She’s learning on the fly and her attitude is great. If she continues on it will make us much better. You won’t see her value in the stats but you’ll see it in the win-loss column. She’s gonna do things like screen for us, make it tough for other teams to get to the middle and score and you won’t see that in stats but it benefits us greatly.”
Teagan Hinson has been one of the team’s top defensive players. Hinson had 10 rebounds and two steals against Gatewood.
The varsity boys fell 74-41 to Gatewood. Camden Moss led the team with 11 points while Chase Taylor scored nine.
Corbett Crews finished with five points and Barrett Downing scored four. Kooper Pounds added three points.
Piedmont will travel to Gatewood on Friday with varsity games beginning at 6 p.m.
