Canes Split Weekend Action
The Monticello Hurricanes were back in action last weekend, first in a road matchup against the Mary Persons Bulldogs, and on Saturday at home against the Putnam County War Eagles.
Prior to those games, both varsity teams traveled up to Roswell to take on the Centennial Knights, with the girls picking up win number three on the season, winning by a score of 50-38. The boys team did not fare as well, falling to the boys team by final score of 82-61.
Friday, the teams visited Mary Persons in a return battle with the Dogs. The last time these two met, both the boys and girls teams pulled out wins in what started a weekend sweep, driving momentum for a small three-game winning streak for the girls. In what could be considered a case of deja vu, both Hurricane teams were able to pull off big wins.
The boys fighting back from double digits deficits five separate times in their game, including by nine at the half, before storming back late in the second half and coming up victorious by a 10-point margin at 57-47.
The Lady Hurricanes winning decisively, cranking out a 37-point spread in a 64-27 victory over the Lady Bulldogs to even their record at 4-4 amidst a four game win streak. Ahead 37-13 at the half, freshman Jazmin Maddox was able to put up 28 points in three quarters of play, and was followed in the scoring department by Kamryn Davis with 9, Kinya Thomas with 8, and Stevi Davis with 7.
On Saturday, Putnam County came calling for a non-region contest, the boys with their #1 ranking and clean slate of a 12-0 record, and the Lady War Eagles at 8-3, both teams knew they’d have their hands full. The boys were able to jump out on Putnam early in the game, and went into the break with a one-point lead at the half. The War Eagles increased their defensive pressure in the second half, and the Hurricanes weren’t able to handle it, eventually falling by a final score of 67-51.
The Lady Hurricanes fell to Putnam by a final score of 54-43, but considering the final scores from the past two seasons (falling by margins of 40-50 points) the effort and growth of the Lady ‘Canes bodes well for this season, as they roll into Christmas tournament play with a 4-5 record. Jazmin Maddox led the scoring charge against Putnam, dropping 24 points, along with eight for Thomas, and five for Davis.
Both teams will be traveling to Banks County over the Christmas holiday break, playing in the annual Banks County Holiday Classic on Friday and Saturday. Both teams will square off with the Leopards of Banks, with the girls playing at 7 p.m., and the boys tipping off at 8:30 p.m..
Come out and support your Canes!
