MAT COUGARS PLACE AT DUALS

Using a strong regular season as a jumping off point, the Piedmont Academy varsity wrestling team took fourth at state duals this weekend. Piedmont defeated Stratford 44-35 in the quarterfinals before falling to Athens Christian School 60-16 in the semifinals. The ACS Eagles would eventually win the state championship. In the consolation semifinals, the Mat Cougars defeated Brookstone 38-36. In the match for third place, Piedmont and St. Anne Pacelli tied 42-42 but the Mat Cougars lost on the tiebreaker. Top performers for Piedmont and Coach Nick Meadows included Austin Anglin (106, 3-0), Peyton Gallups (113, 2-1 as eighth grader), Caleb Benton (144, 4-0) and Colt Leddon (2-0). Piedmont will wrestle in the Region 4 traditional tournament this Friday at home beginning at 5 p.m.
