Hurricane Soccer Boys Compete

The Jasper Hurricanes Junior Varsity boys soccer team traveled to Jackson High last week for the season opener against the Red Devils, where the Hurricanes unfortunately fell short, 8-2.

Daniel Mendoza and Luis Torres both scored a goal each to help the Canes offensively. Mauricio Velasquez led the defense, and showed great strength, determination, and grit from the center back spot.

The Canes are a very young team this year, comprised mostly of freshman, but have already shown great growth both in their passing, movement on the ball, and possession.

Coach Ashley Clegg said, “we’ve seen this cycle before with building years in the past, and we know the team is young, but we have a plan that we intend to execute in order to build for the future.”

The JV squad is lead by Head Coach Emily Wilder, alongside Austin Sullivan and Jessica Tennyson.

The Jasper Hurricanes Varsity soccer boys traveled to GMC to take on the reigning state champs last Tuesday.

The Canes came out shaky the first half against a formation they weren’t used to countering, but still were able to keep the game scoreless going into the half. At the half, coaches Ashley Clegg and Karen Hays made a formation change which proved quite effective moving into the second half. The experienced and skillful team were able to efficiently execute the new formation lineup, and played it to perfection.

With an unlucky call against the Canes in the 18th minute in the second half, the Bulldogs were granted a PK against team leader and goalie, Ricardo Sanchez-Hernandez, where unfortunately, the goal was made.

The Canes fought back the entire game, and left everything on the field even in the last ten seconds where they almost scored on a corner sent in by junior, Luis Ramirez.

The Canes were led defensively by Bryson Jackson, Julio Sanchez, Chris White, and Lane Lackey. Clegg said, “the boys showed great growth since last year, which resulted in a 6-0 loss against GMC at home. For us, there were lots of wins for us to celebrate, and this immediate growth sets the tone for the strength this team will show throughout the season.”
