Lady Cougars Begin New Soccer Season

The Piedmont Academy varsity girls soccer team will face many challenges this spring.

The Lady Cougars will be in Class AAA for 2025.

Coach Derrick Adams returns for his second season leading the program.

“I am extremely enthusiastic about the upcoming season,” said Adams, who is being assisted by Estefanie Cumbas.

On the field, the Lady Cougars will be relatively young with a majority of the team members being sophomores.

“While we are young, this means good things for the future of the program,” Adams said.

Seniors Sam Gray, Daylin Meadows and Gracie Kinard are seniors for 2025.

New players include Jessi Conner and Addie Phillips, who bring significant speed and skill to the team’s offense.

Adams said he looks forward to the play of Zarya Lindsey and Abby Moore. In addition, Mary Myles and Morgan Hayes will help comprise a strong defense.

“We will face numerous challenges, including competing against prominent teams in Macon,” Adams said. “I am looking forward to this season and postseason.”

The season began last Friday at home with a 6-0 loss to Westfield. It was just the first of what will be many matches with tough opponents this spring.

“Despite the loss, I am extremely proud of our young team,” Adams said. “The girls played a strong first game. The first goal was not scored until the 56th minute in the second half and our girls continued to battle throughout the match.”

Gray was the Player of the Game while Meadows had 26 saves in goal. Freshman Helen Downs and Hayes, a sophomore, also played well keeping the match close into the second half.

“I am extremely proud of the team’s effort,” Adams said.

The Lady Cougars will host Alcovy High School today, Feb. 27 and travel to Covenant Academy in on Friday. Both matches begin at 5:30 p.m.
