Man Is Rescued In River
Jasper County Fire And Rescue personnel have been busy, removing trees from the road during so many recent storms, and on Sunday they participated in a search and rescue mission along with personnel from Butts County.
Several people were kayaking and five ended upon the Butts County side of the river due to heavy currents. A male was stuck on an island that rescuers were only able to reach him by jumping in the extremely fast-moving water. He was on the other side of the island where he was stuck in the middle of the river by a tree branch.
Rescue was made by the team tracking approximately 100 yards to the other side of the island, throwing the victim a line and gear and pulling him back. Then they had to return to the side of the island where the rest of the team was to pull them all back across the river again to complete the rescue.
Those helping with the rescue included Alex Sims, Shawn Holmes, Maritsa Bell, Robb Leggett, and Chief Chris Finch. They used the department’s Polaris to trek about three miles back in a field to access the river where the victim was. Butts County Chief Johnson was there along with a couple of his personnel.
