Diamond Cougars See Season End
The Piedmont Academy baseball team was so close to advancing in the GIAA AAA state playoffs but was not quite able to get past Dominion in a quarterfinal series last week.
The Cougars dropped two one-run games on the road to finish the 2025 season at 14-13.
In a 5-4 loss, Piedmont trailed 4-2 going into the seventh inning but was able to score two runs in the top of the seventh. Dominion, however, scored the game-winner in the bottom half of the inning.
The Cougars had eight hits in the game compared to only five for Dominion.
Nick Gervasio worked four innings and recorded three strikeouts. Brayden Ross worked the final 2.2 innings.
At the plate, Alex Statham had a double and finished the game with two hits. Jamus Wingate, Zach Simmons and Tyler Griswell each drove in runs.
Chase Taylor was 2-for-4 with a run and double.
In the 6-5 loss, Piedmont trailed 5-1 going into the sixth before pushing four across in the seventh. Once again, however, Dominion scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. And similar to the other contest, Piedmont had more hits than the Knights.
Simmons had a double and drove in two runs for the Cougars while Wingate, Ross and Jayden Litner all drove in runs.
Taylor was 2-for-4 with a run and Statham had a big day at the plate going 3-for-3 with two runs.
Wingate and Simmons combined for the pitching duties totaling seven strikeouts.
