Rise Against Hunger Event Set for December 20 at Presbyterian Church

Monticello Presbyterian Church invites everyone to participate in a food packaging event with Rise Against Hunger on Sunday, Dec. 20. The event will be in the fellowship hall, located at 246 East Washington Street.

Rise Against Hunger works to end hunger by empowering communities, nourishing lives, and responding to emergencies. The meals packaged at this event will be distributed to hungry people around the world. Rise Against Hunger has modified the event format to follow CDC recommendations for COVID-19.

Packaging will be done in three shifts of 10 people. Shifts will be approximately one and a half hours each, beginning at 3 p.m. 5 p.m., and 7 p.m. Tables and equipment will be sanitized between each shift. Six-foot spacing will be maintained between volunteers, and masks will be required in addition to the usual gloves and hairnets. Family groups of up to three people also can work together at the same station. Volunteers need to sign waivers online ahead of time.

It can be challenging to figure out how to reach out to a hurting world during these pandemic times. How wonderful that we have this opportunity!

Additionally, the need is greater than ever. Rise Against Hunger was not able to have meal packaging events for several months earlier this year until they developed COVID-19 protocols. They have provided only about one-fourth the usual number of meals this year. At the same time, COVID-19 has approximately doubled the number of hungry people. We can touch lives in a real way as we package more than 10,000 meals to feed some of our most vulnerable neighbors.
