Scarecrow Contest Begins Soon

The Monticello-Jasper County Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a scarecrow contest and Deer symbol scavenger hunt this fall.

The contest is open to all individuals/families, non-profit organizations, schools, churches, clubs, businesses and governments.

Participants must pre-register, and the registration deadline is September 23. Entry forms may be submitted in persons to the Visitors’ Center, located next to City Hall on the Square, or mailed to Monticello-Jasper County Chamber of Commerce P.O. Box 133, Monticello, GA, 31064. A non-refundable entry fee of $25 must accompany the entry form.

Make check or money order payable to Monticello-Jasper County Chamber of Commerce. The location of each scarecrow will be based on who registers first.

There will be cash prizes for first, second and third place non-business entries. The amount of the cash prize will depend on the number of entries.

Business prizes will include a Cornerstone membership, valued at $500, from the COC. Other prizes include a Champion membership add-on at a value of $250, and a banner advertisement on the COC website. Winners photo will be taken and featured in The Monticello News.

Scarecrows are to be set up September 25 through 30. The COC will tell participants where to set their scarecrows up. Removal dates are November 1-3, and must be removed before November 4.

All scarecrow entries must be hand-made. Scarecrows will be subject to all weather conditions, therefore construction materials should be durable and all ornamentation securely attached.

Jasper County is the Deer Capital of Georgia. A scavenger hunt is tied into the scarecrow contest. Please incorporate Deer Season items(s) into each scarecrow. Examples include antlers, orange vests, deer symbol, camouflage, deer blind, be creative. No real guns, please! It is a scavenger hunt. Deer symbols can be hidden or obvious. Electricity is not available.

A numbered sign with the exhibitor’s name will be provided to each exhibitor and it must accompany each exhibit. This will help friends and family find entries when visiting Downtown. Political statements are not permitted; however, business entries may contain advertising.

Scarecrows should be set up completely no later than September 30, to be included in judging by the general public. Voting will be conducted at the COC office in the Visitors’ Center next to City Hall. Winners will be announced on October 31, via Facebook Live. Winning scarecrows will be featured in The Monticello News.

Prizes may be claimed inside the Visitors’ Center during business hours the week after the judging.
