JCHS Graduate Is Player of the Year

J’Quavious “Qua” Thurmond, a 2014 Jasper County High School graduate, now attends New Hampshire Technical Institute (NHTI) in New Hampshire. Qua, who plays for the NHTI boys basketball team, was named “Conference Player of the Year” and “Defensive Player” for the Lynx basketball team last week as they played in the Conference finals and won the title.

He was credited with helping lead his team to the nationals. As conference champs, they will begin playing in the national championship tournament in Uniontown, Pa., today, March 1. He is pictured with his team in the top photo (second row, left) following the conference title victory. In the photo on the right, Qua displays his most recent award for being named to the USCAA First Team All American during the NHTI sports banquet held Tuesday.

His teammate Deric Jackson of Maryland was also named to the Second Team All American. Qua is the son of Joe K. Davis, Jr. and the late Katrina Thurmond Davis of Monticello. He has a sister, Shekenia Thurmond, attending Armstrong University in Savannah studying to be a veterinarian. Martha Thurmond of Monticello is his grandmother.
