Kiwanis Meets at Library
The Monticello Kiwanis Club met at the Jasper County Library Monday, and Library Manager Tamala Alexander told them of many services available at the facility.
The library is part of the PINES network, giving patrons access to 9.6 million books and materials statewide. It is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday. Saturday hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the library is open Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. It is located at 319 East Greene Street, about a block from the Square. The library may be reached at 706-468-6292.
The Jasper County Library is widely known for its Persons collection—a collection of materials on art, architecture and design. It was purchased with funds given to the library by the Thomas Persons estate in 2008. It is used by patrons here, and patrons across the state. Mrs. Alexander says it is actually used more by others, which is understandable.
One of the most used services of the library is its free wi-fi. No log-in or password is required, and the library predicts it will be used for 10,999 sessions in 2015, a 214 percent increase from the 3,500 sessions it was used in 2013. The network can be used in the library or outside of the library. So when the library is closed, people sit in the parking lot or in the yard and access the internet.
The library has Nabi tablets for the children, and more than 40 computers available for patron use. Patrons may also download free music with Freegal. The mp3 music files are theirs to keep. E-books may also be downloaded and read on patron’s personal devices.
The library offers free access to ancestry and other genealogy resources, job and career Accelerator, and Learning Express.
