My Dad
If you read this column regularly you’ll note that I seem to write about people after they’re gone as a reflection of what they meant to me and the impact that they had on my life.
I am trying to change that perspective and let people know while they’re still here on Earth just that.
Being that Sunday is Father’s Day, I thought I’d do just that.
My DAD is the greatest dad in the entire universe, and quite possibly other unknown universes.
He is the one that I call when I need help with any home repair; he’s the one I call for recipes and cooking tips, for what gifts to buy Mama, and to just tell him how much I love him.
He’s great for entertainment. He loves to cook, eat, entertain, play cards-—Texas Hold ‘em, and more recently, left right center.
He’s Italian and loves to spice everything up. He’s a master gardener. You should see all of the squash and zucchini that he produces this time of year. And his tomatoes taste better because he grew them.
He entertains my love for the Braves and he and I love just being lazy (which if you know him is a job in itself as he is always on the go) and watching hunting shows.
Most of you know that he is a pool man. He works hard, and loves to hunt.
What you may not know is that the beginning for he and I was tough. As any new addition to a family, I wasn’t the ideal stepchild to inherit.
At the time I didn’t want him to break up my “family.” It had been just us girls (Mama, me and Emily) for about 15 years and changing that was scary.
I knew from day one that my DAD was a special man. I just didn’t want to accept it.
Today, I’m not sure what I would do without him. He’s been there for me through the last 10 years without blinking an eye. He loves me back, goes out of his way for me and there is no question in my mind that I am his daughter.
I used to say that all of the men in my life let me down..including my father…but I can’t say that any longer. My daddy won’t.
So whoever the ‘dad’ in your life might be, tell him you love him. TODAY!!
I Love you, ‘Stepdaddy’!!!
