Piedmont Academy Closes Another Day

Piedmont Academy has announced it will be closed Friday, Sept. 18, because of excessive absences on Thursday, Sept. 17. Some 61 students were absent Thursday.

The school was closed Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 15 and 16 because of numerous absences on Monday, Sept. 14, with flu-like symptoms.

Judy Nelson, spokeswoman for the school, said that nearly 50 students of a 351 student population were absent Monday, and the decision was made to close school Tuesday. On Tuesday, Mrs. Nelson reported school would also be closed Wednesday. The school has ordered special “bombs” designed to fight viruses to be sure every inch of the school is germ free.

September 15, will be considered a “snow day” which was built into the calendar, and Wednesday’s closing will be made up on Thursday, Oct. 8. Originally, October 8 was a teacher workday.

Mrs. Nelson reported the school has been taking every precaution already to guard against the transmission of the flu. She said the sports teams are bleaching water containeres, and the cleaning crews are wiping door handles and such constantly, but the highly contagious quality of the virus make it hard to fight.

Teacher and students were out both days, with just the cleaning crews and a few administrators in the school.
