Teacher Plants Seeds of Learning

Laurie Robinson doesn’t raise a traditional crop of corn or cotton, she plants the seeds of learning in her first graders each day.
“What they learn in the first grade is the basis for learning the rest of the lives.”
And she has been doing just that for the last 18 years, all 18 years teaching first grade at Jasper County Primary School.
Today, she sees the crop of learners that she planted so many years ago graduating from college, getting jobs, starting families to repeat the cycle of life sending their children to her classroom.
She is devoted to children in and out of the classroom. Her son, Will, an eighth-grader at Jasper County Middle School can always count on her to be his biggest fan as he plays the trombone in the Jasper County Hurricane Marching Band, even going to away games.
Kate is only nine and a fourth grader at Washington Park Elementary who plays softball and basketball and can always hear her mother cheering her on.
Growing up in Greensboro, her mother was an x-ray technician and her father owned Leach Logging Company. By the time she was 14, the family had moved to Monticello and still call it home.
Laurie met her future husband, Jason, when they attended Jasper County High School. Jason is now a manager at AT&T.
Her hobbies include 5K races, reading mysteries, watching her favorite television series, “Modern Family,” and cheering on her Atlanta Falcons. In fact, on her bucket list is “I would LOVE to be on the sidelines during a Falcons game standing with the players and coaches.”
Maybe she could teach them a thing or two also.
Planting seeds of learning in first graders may be her job, but all seeds need to be nurtured to bring them to their full potential.
Mrs. Robinson is the perfect person for this work as she says, “I truly love teaching and there is nothing I had rather do”.
