Marching ‘Canes Develop Show at Camp

Once again, the Marching Hurricanes at Jasper County High School take to the field—the practice field, that is—in preparation for another marching season and another halftime performance.

This is band camp: a full week of training, with practices each day, morning and afternoon. Band members work on musical pieces and also learn marching steps/field arrangements. As can easily be assumed, the Marching ‘Canes spend numerous hours in doors performing their show music, and also outdoors in the glaring sun and heat practicing routines.

Band Director Chris Savage leads the camp with the help of the following instructors: Ray Buck, Middle School Director; Kim Savage, color guard coordinator; Wayne Bennett, Brass Coordinator; Matt Bennett, Percussion Coordinator; and Mercy Montgomery, color guard instructor.

Mr. Savage shared the theme for the show: Cirque du Soleil la Nouba. He said, “The audience should look for a traveling circus to roll in for this performance. And, as soon as the last note is played, the band will ‘pack up’ and their train will be leaving for the next stop.”

Sierra Whitt, a senior band member, will be the sole Drum Major of the Marching ‘Canes. She was recently named top female conductor at the University of Georgia’s drum major camp.

Incidentally, the band will perform their show each Friday, with the exception of homecoming, plus they will be competing at two contests/festivals; October 3 at South Gwinnett and October 24 at Rockdale.
