Jay Brinson Is Released from Contract

After meeting in executive session at a called meeting on May 6, the members of the Board of Education voted unanimously to release School Superintendent Jay Brinson from his contractual obligations, effective June 30, 2009.

Mr. Brinson has accepted the position of Superintendent of Schools for Crisp County in Cordele, where he was originally from and still maintains a home there. His tenure here will end when an interim superintendent has been named.

“The process which could take from four to six months is being conducted by the Georgia School Board, and Mr. Brinson will remain in place until his replacement has been identified and is on board, hopefully by July 1,” said School Board Chair Phyllis Norwood.

When asked if prior decisions would be affected by his leaving, Mr. Brinson said, “No, all decisions made and voted on by the Board will remain in effect, nothing will change.”

Supporters of the agriculture program at Jasper County High School are still trying to change the minds of school board members. A presentation is planned for the board’s work session today, May 14, at 7 p.m.

Under the leadership of Mr. Brinson, the board voted to do away with the agriculture program at the high school, as a part of the reduction in force done ostensibly because of reduced funding.

All board members, vice-chair Joel Gaston, Bobby Norris, Paul Kelly, and Joy Wild, in addition to Mrs. Norwood were present at the meeting. Mr. Brinson was also present at last week’s called meeting.
