School Board Approves Company for Water and Sewer Construction
Pyles Plumbing & Utility Contractors, Inc. in Macon was awarded the water and sewer construction contract for the new high school during a Monday called meeting of the Jasper County School Board.
School board members, minus chairman Phyllis Norwood, reviewed four bids for water and sewer services ranging in price from $1.2 million to $1.8 million. At the recommendation of Supt. Jay Brinson, board members unanimously selected the apparent low bidder’s estimate of $1,163,034 with the understanding that the city of Monticello would assist with cost saving practices.
Supt. Brinson also reviewed a memo from Parrish Construction Group, contracted to build the new high school, regarding the alternate use of materials that could produce cost savings without sacrificing quality. The company recommended the use of C900 DR18 PVC pipe in lieu of ductile iron pipe which is currently more expensive than the suggested alternative.

In other business, board members reviewed and approved the 2007 career, technical, and agricultural plan presented by assistant principal Celeste Cannon. The total budget for the program was approved for $707,978 with the preponderance of the funds going toward salaries and benefits for eight vocational educators, operational expenses, and textbooks.
Supt. Brinson also noted that Jasper County has launched an appeal to the 2005 sales ratio study. It was reported that the county was handling the appeal this year whereas the school board handled last year’s appeal which was met with success.
Supt. Brinson said that the central office had not seen a hard copy of any documentation regarding the appeal from the county yet. When asked if the school system’s financial administrator was aiding the county, the superintendent said that school system personnel would be glad to assist with the process but they haven’t been asked.
School board members approved providing any necessary support to the county for the sales ratio appeal process.
The next meeting of the Jasper County School Board is scheduled as a work session today, June 15 beginning at 7 p.m. in the board office located at the old Washington Park School.
