Local FBLA Chapter Gets Silver Award

Jasper County High School’s Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) were presented the Silver Chapter of the Year award at the state FBLA conference last weekend in Atlanta.

In order to earn this honor, local FBLA members were required to put together a chapter of the year report which included all school, community, region and state events the chapter participated in since last March.

The report was more than 30 pages and included summaries and pictures of activities such as FBLA week; sponsoring a needy family at Thanksgiving and Christmas; sponsoring the Five Days of Jeans project to raise money to help local children with school supplies; participating as volunteers for Haunticello, the Deer Festival, and the Deer Dash; presenting a resume-writing workshop to parents at Jasper County Primary School; and many others.

“Our FBLA members have worked hard to achieve the silver award,” Mrs. Amy Scroggs, FBLA advisor, said. “Last year, we earned the bronze award, and the members just weren’t satisfied with that. They wanted to go further this year and try for silver.

Now, the members are pushing to go ahead and get started on next year’s report so we can earn the gold chapter of the year award.”

In addition to earning the silver award, local FBLA members were presented with certificates for “state project recognition” and “membership achievement award.”

This year’s state FBLA project was Georgia Youth Saves, which encouraged FBLA members to begin a savings program with a local bank to help the students put away whatever amount they could toward a goal that the students set for themselves. Most local members participated this year and signed up to begin saving each month.

FBLA worked closely with McIntosh State Bank and Bank of Monticello to help students become more aware of the need to save money and by offering the Georgia Youth Saves savings accounts to local students.

The membership achievement award was presented to schools who maintained or increased membership during the 2004-2005 school year. This year, FBLA had 46 members, up from 33 last school year.
“It is our goal to increase membership each year—not just for numbers sake, but for the sake of developing leaders in our school and community,” Mrs. Scroggs said.
