Courthouse Move Underway

Jasper County offices are a little topsy-turvy this week as most are relocated, either temporarily or permanently.

The Jasper County Commissioners met in their new quarters Monday, on the ground floor of the new Courthouse addition. That will be their new permanent location.

On Tuesday, workers were moving the office of Probate Judge Kathy Tyler. That office will be temporarily relocated in the Courthouse annex, across North Warren Street from the addition, where the County Commissioners used to be.

The Clerk of Courts office moved Friday, making history in the process. For only the second time in Jasper County history the official courtroom for the Jasper County Courthouse was changed. “The last time we had a change in courtrooms was 95 years ago when Mr. R.L. Davis moved the Clerk of Courts operation from the Courthouse in the middle of the Square to the one at the corner of Greene and Warren Streets,” said Dan Jordan, the current Clerk of Courts. “And he had a lot less books and records than we have today.”

Court was held in the Courtroom on the second floor of the new addition. The acoustics of the new Courtroom were reported to be satisfactory. Once the renovation of the old building is complete, the large historic courtroom will be put back into service.

For the next couple of weeks, persons visiting the Courthouse should allow a little extra time to locate the office they are visiting, and maybe take a few minutes to look at the new construction.
